Stelmach The time for virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies is now. This was the message conveyed by Dr. Alberto Odor through his presentation on VR and AR applications in medicine. In what is estimated to become a hundred-billion-dollar market, AR and VR technologies have exploded as modern mechanics and software have converged to create quality, affordable products. VR offers users the opportunity to experience full sensory immersion into constructed realities, interacting with fea- tures within the virtual environment. This technology can be used for virtual exposure therapy in PTSD and phobia disorders, distraction during painful medical treatments, and surgical training in pseudo-realistic environments. AR allows us to superimpose technology into the physical world, creating interactive holographic images that can be used for neurorehabilitation, education, training, and various other applications. Dr. Odor delivered a spirited, heartfelt testimony about the potential for these products and the ways in which they can be applied to better our human experience. In a world where humans can augment reality and create new environments in which to immerse ourselves, the possibilities are endless. Presentation: Wellness, Ergonomics and Beyond Presenter: Erik Peper, PhD & Richard Harvey, PhD Student reviewer: Cody Gustaveson Dr. Erik Peper discussed the impact of evolutionary traps, adapted preferences we have evolved, which first promote survival but later promote harm, on our daily lives. For instance, blue light from engineered screens might be an evolutionary trap that has a negative impact on sleep cycles. Similarly, sugar content in the modern diet might have a negative metabolic impact on health and weight control. These evolutionary traps are discussed in the context of ergonomics and how individuals view their work computers, type, and view mobile phones. Dr. Richard Harvey discussed biofeedback technology that can be implemented to help improve posture and ergonomics.
